A photographic celebration of canine companions

Portraits of paws and personality capturing the bond between people and furry friends will be displayed in the inaugural Best in Show 2025: Australian Photographic Dog Prize exhibition at the David Roche Gallery from 30 August to 25 October.

From more than 250 submissions across Australia, 80 standout finalists have been selected in four charming categories: Dog Portrait, Dogs and Companions, Dogs in Action, and Puppies. Open to professional, amateur, and young photographers alike, the prize celebrates photography as a way of capturing the joy, loyalty and personality of our furry friends.

“The response to the inaugural prize has been heartening with hundreds of entries and I extend my warm congratulations to the selected finalists exhibited,” says co-judge and Gallery Director Robert Reason.

The prize honours the legacy of David Roche AM (1930–2013)—an art collector, dog breeder and international dog show judge. His historic home, Fermoy House, and its prized collection of canine memorabilia set the stage for this celebration of man’s best friend.

International animal photographer and co-judge Alex Cearns OAM was equally moved:

“Seeing so many joyful representations of dogs reaffirmed for me the love and bond we share with our dogs and the importance of these loyal companions in our lives.”

With a first prize of $5000, a Young Photographer award ($500), and a People’s Choice prize also up for grabs, the competition is as meaningful as it is heartwarming. A beautifully illustrated dogalogue accompanies the show.
