Bucket list SA: The mighty Murray, reimagined

A river flows, illuminated by the warm hues of sunset in the background.
If your idea of river life is a slow drift with a glass of wine in hand and red cliffs glowing in the sunset – then the Murray is calling. South Australia’s stretch of the Murray River offers more than houseboats and fishing rods (though both are still delightful options).

From luxe paddle steamer cruises to wildlife encounters and cellar door hopping, there’s plenty to explore at your own pace.

Start in Mannum, where heritage meets hospitality. Climb aboard the iconic PS Murray Princess for a few days of cruising past ancient limestone cliffs and spotting pelicans at play. Prefer to steer your own course? Houseboat hire is big here, with everything from budget-friendly floats to five-star floating villas complete with hot tubs.

A river boat glides down a river, surrounded by lush trees in the background.

For nature lovers, Murray River National Park is a must. Just outside Berri and Loxton, the park is brimming with wetland trails, red gum woodlands, and birdlife that’ll have your camera working overtime. Early morning kayak, anyone?

Fancy something wilder? Head to Monarto Safari Park, just outside Murray Bridge. It’s one of the world’s largest open-range zoos—and yes, you can go eye-to-eye with a lion (safely, of course) on their behind-the-scenes tours.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Riverland trip without a glass of something local. The region is famed for its fruit-forward wines, and producers like 919 Wines and Whistling Kite offer tastings with a view.

Whether it’s a quiet getaway, a new adventure, or ticking off a long-held dream, the Murray delivers. Less rush, more river.
