Hansel & Gretel – State Opera

21 - 29 Aug 26

Hansel & Gretel – State Opera South Australia at Her Majesty’s Theatre

Step into the dark, enchanted forest where danger lurks behind every tree and sweetness hides sinister secrets. State Opera South Australia brings Humperdinck’s beloved fairy tale to Her Majesty’s Theatre this August in a visionary, genre-bending new production directed by Constantine Costi, with stunning lead design by Jonathon Oxlade.

Based on the haunting original by the Brothers Grimm, this timeless story of courage, cunning and the triumph of self-reliance is brought to life with extraordinary talent both on and off stage. The world’s most in-demand countertenor, Kangmin Justin Kim, takes the role of Hansel, alongside Sofia Troncoso as Gretel and the remarkable Catherine Carby in the dual role of the Witch and the Mother. The production is accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and a wonderfully talented Children’s Chorus.

Raw, riveting and deeply human – this is Hansel & Gretel as you’ve never seen it before. A fairy tale not just for children, but for anyone who has ever had to face their fears and find their way home.

Performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 21, 25, 27 and 29 August 2026. Book via Ticketek.
