Adam Rapp’s The Sound Inside, widely considered one of the most significant contemporary plays of the last decade, will make its South Australian premiere at Holden Street Theatres this August.
The Tony Award-nominated drama unfolds with the precision of a gripping novel. At its centre is the unlikely connection between Bella, a celebrated author and college professor, and Christopher, her brilliant and volatile student. United by their love of words and books, they are drawn to each other. As their connection deepens, Bella reveals a secret that forces them both toward an unthinkable decision.
Directed by Holden Street Theatres Inc.’s Director in Residence Nick Fagan, the production stars two of South Australia’s leading theatrical talents: Michelle Nightingale as Bella Baird and Benji Riggs as Christopher Dunn.

The production forms part of HST Inc.’s 2026 in-house season, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to presenting world-class independent productions that create memorable and accessible experiences for audiences.
