State Theatre – Commentary

21 Aug 26 - 05 Sep 26

State Theatre Company South Australia presents Ash Flanders’ sharp, provocative play exploring the ethics of artmaking, accountability and memory in an era of public reckoning. Gyton Grantley (Underbelly, House Husbands) stars as Nick, a once-promising filmmaker turned university lecturer whose controversial debut feature is being resurrected for a retrospective screening. As he prepares a director’s commentary, the past resurfaces through a chorus of women whose revelations set off a chain of reckonings.

Directed by Petra Kalive, the play’s narrative cleverly mirrors the fragmented form of a DVD commentary track — non-linear, reflexive, full of contradiction and omission. The cast includes Kate Cheel, Shardae Santos and Anna Steen. Audio described, captioned and relaxed performances are available throughout the season.
