Five wines, a wine expert, and at least five jokes. This is a tasting with a difference Perfect for lovers of quaffable wines, and those that enjoy a ‘schluck’.
Sweeney Preston and Ethan Cavanagh are hilarious. A finely tuned, comedic partnership, most likely refined over many drinks. They understand their audience, and they understand the effects of wine. Add in the commentary of local wine expert Henry Doyle, and you have the perfect blend.
Like all good guided tastings the technique is demonstrated but let’s not get bogged down in what you discover on the nose or the back palate. This is a healthy gulp followed by a suitable exclamation, starting with a simple ‘Mmmmm’ and progressing to ‘Oooh, there’s a lot going on there’.
It’s clear that Doyle knows and loves wine. The perfect wine ambassador, he shares his knowledge in a relaxed and affable way using layman’s terms, and deviation results in ringing of the ‘Bullshit Bell’. Its not all laughs, there is certainly an educational aspect to this tasting touching on topics like varietals, and labelling requirements.
A highlight is the audience generated tasting notes.
Like a good bottle of wine, this is a performance to share with friends. Its no surprise that the original shows are fully booked. Two new shows have been added to the season at Gluttony, and if you are quick you may be able to grab a ticket.
