Book Review: The Home Style Handbook by Lucy Gough

FIFTY+SA Arts Reviewer, Diana Carroll, finds lots to love in this new interior style guide.
Dr Diana Carroll

Australian interior stylist Lucy Gough has enjoyed a stellar career both here and in the UK. During 12 years living in London she art directed, styled, and created concepts for many leading brands and publications including John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Homes & Gardens, House Beautiful UK, The Sunday Times, Dulux, and Crown Paint.

Clearly we can’t all afford to employ a top designer to come in and make our home look fabulous, but you don’t need to with this beautiful new book. It’s an easy-to-follow room-by-room guide to creating a home that is original and authentic, reflecting your personal taste and lifestyle to be true to you.

This gorgeous book is both inspirational and practical. Importantly, you don’t need to be living in a fancy mansion or shabby-chic rustic farmhouse to use these styling techniques. Many of them can be easily adapted for your rental or starter home. Any space, big or small, transient or forever home, can be styled with the colours, furniture, soft furnishings, and techniques detailed here. It’s very often about the finishing touches as well as the major statements.

Lucy Gough holds your hand as she takes you through the basics of colour palettes, interior styling, and creating impact in the home. She then tackles various key spaces, so if you just want to update your bathroom or add a wow-factor to the lounge, it’s all here. Even spaces that are often overlooked, such as the entrance way or hall, are made welcoming and functional. No longer will it be just somewhere to abandon your boots, beach shoes, and brollies.

The book is designed for you to ‘dip in and read the pages out of order, depending on the room for which you’re seeking inspiration.’ The many helpful hints include how to create and use a mood-board to understand your own style profile; ways to translate magazine and online imagery into your own space; and how create impact in the home with art, plants, and accessories. And even if you will never paint a feature wall or suspend cascading greenery from the ceiling, you can still delight in browsing through this beautiful coffee-table book and knowing you could if you wanted to!

This book really is an absolute delight and could be the perfect Christmas gift for someone in your life – or for Santa to gift to you on Christmas morning.
