Cirque Alfonse the multi-generational family troupe behind Animal

Adelaide Fringe attracts a diverse array of talent, ranging from established acts to emerging performers. This year, at The Garden of Unearthly Delights, audiences are in for a treat with the Australian premiere of Animal, presented by the globally acclaimed family circus troupe, Cirque Alfonse from Canada.

Animal not only promises incredible talent but also gives audiences a glimpse into the unique dynamics of a multi-generational family troupe.

The “grandfather” of the Cirque Alfonse Alain Carabinier, now aged 78 and one of the oldest performers at this year’s Adelaide Fringe, began his circus journey at the age of 60.

His story is a testament to the enduring spirit and passion that drives Cirque Alfonse. From managing a small farm in Canada to touring the world, his journey adds a heart-warming layer to the troupe’s back story.

“On my 60th birthday, my son Antoine and daughter Julie erected a big top tent in our village and put on a show, giving me my lifetime wish to ‘have a go on stage’ as my birthday present. That’s how Cirque Alfonse started, and 18 years on, we have never looked back!” said Alain.

This personal touch of a family celebrating and nurturing a dream emphasises the deep-rooted connection that makes Cirque Alfonse more than just a circus troupe.

“Everyone leaves our show feeling like they witnessed something magical – something authentic that can only come from family, lots of love and of course talent,” Alain said.

Animal, has toured the world over the last two years and marks its Australian premiere this season at the Adelaide Fringe.

Antoine Carabinier, the Artistic Director for Cirque Alfonse, said they were thrilled to return to the Garden after a five-year hiatus.

“We love Adelaide and can’t wait to immerse ourselves in the Festival and city over the season. Most importantly, it is one of our favourite places to perform in the world, and we are thrilled to present our new show, Animal, to our fans,” he said.

Animal offers an irresistible mix of trad and soul, which the troupe calls ‘agricultural funk.’ It seamlessly blends circus, song, dance, and theatre with an original soundtrack that promises to have audiences toe-tapping and sitting on the edge of their seats.

Surreal farm fables take centre stage, creating a re-imagined agricultural world where the farm is turned upside down, and the barn inside out! Familiar creatures are given a whimsical twist, with chickens sporting teeth, ducks becoming slightly menacing, and cows kicking up a fuss.

Alain, who performs one of the most dangerous stunts in the show said that his pride in the family’s accomplishments and their global journey is palpable, making the show not just a spectacle but a testament to the power of dreams and familial bonds.

“We have toured this show over the last two years, visiting more than 9 countries, performing the show more than 175 times to more than 100,000 people across the globe!” He said.

Animal is a must-see hit show for the Fringe, suitable for the entire family, young and old.

The season is running until Sunday, 17 March. With such a unique blend of talent, history, and heart, tickets are on sale now, and it is highly recommended to secure them quickly as this season is expected to sell out. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the magic created by Cirque Alfonse – a perfect union of family, tradition, and extraordinary talent under the big top of The Garden of Unearthly Delights.
