South Australian vocal group The 60 Four have spent more than a decade deciding what their audiences want to hear. For one night only, they’re flipping the script.
The 60 Four: By Request comes to Futures Theatre on Friday 25 September, with concertgoers voting in advance to build the setlist from scratch. It’s a first for the group, and the timing couldn’t be better: the show lands just days after their semi-final appearance on The Voice Australia, airing Sunday 20 September.
After purchasing a ticket, audience members can vote for their favourites from a curated catalogue spanning Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli, Queen, Tina Turner and more. The votes are tallied, and the Top 25 most requested songs are revealed and performed live on the night, building to the audience’s number one choice.
Wildcard selections and a few surprises mean even the performers won’t know exactly how the evening will unfold.
Producer and founding member Ben Francis said the concept came from years of post-show conversations.
“We’re constantly having people come up to us after shows and say, ‘Why didn’t you do this song?’ or ‘You have to sing this one next time’,” Francis said. “So this time, we thought — why don’t we actually let them decide?”
“We’ve spent more than ten years building setlists and choosing what we think audiences will love. By Request turns that completely on its head. The audience has the power, and we have to see where they take us.”
Francis said the countdown format adds genuine unpredictability.
“There are definitely songs we think will make the Top 25, but we could be completely wrong. That’s what makes this one so much fun. We genuinely don’t know what the final order is going to look like until the votes are in, and there are a few wildcard moments planned as well.”
Formed in Adelaide in 2015, The 60 Four began as a high-school harmony group and have since grown into one of Australia’s leading retro vocal acts. They’ve performed extensively around Australia and internationally, including theatre tours, festivals and cruise ship performances. Known for world-class harmonies, polished choreography and high-energy shows, the group brings a contemporary edge to the music of the 1960s, 1970s and beyond.
