The news was unveiled in suitably grand fashion during the recently sold-out 25th Birthday Party at the Festival’s Banquet Room, where current Artistic Director Virginia Gay officially handed over the mantle to Kaye.

A multi-award-winning comedian, singer, and writer, Reuben Kaye is no stranger to Australian audiences — or to Adelaide. Known for his razor-sharp wit and fearless performances, he’s carved a niche as one of the most dynamic voices in contemporary cabaret. His appearances at Adelaide Cabaret Festival — including Reuben Kaye: Live and Intimate, The End, and enGORGEd — have left audiences both breathless and begging for more.
In 2026, audiences can expect that same provocative flair and unapologetic theatricality, as Kaye sets out to champion bold storytelling and the power of cabaret to challenge and connect.

Incoming Artistic Director Reuben Kaye shared his passion for the role and the genre:
“Adelaide Cabaret Festival has cemented its place globally as the premiere festival for the boundary pushing art form that is Cabaret. As such it is a home to the best in the industry and celebrates us, the misfits and outcasts,” he says.
Cabaret is the art form of immediacy, where the world view is deliciously tilted, the status quo is questioned and our humanity magnified.
Outgoing Artistic Director Virginia Gay leaves the role with affection and high hopes for her successor.
“I don’t exaggerate when I say that AD-ing this festival has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the welcome and generosity that Adelaide audiences have shown me,” she says.
“I leave you in [Reuben’s] brilliant, leather-and-Swarovski encrusted hands. And you know I’ll be back to see what magic you and he make together in 2026. Try and keep me away!”
