This October, the National Wine Centre marks 25 years since it first opened on the edge of the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Since 6 October 2001, the Centre has grown into a genuine national treasure for local wine lovers and international visitors alike.
Deemed Australia’s home of wine, the Centre brings together the best of the nation’s viticulture, showcasing wines from up to 65 of Australia’s major wine regions. The country’s largest tasting room sits alongside the largest working open-air cellar in the Southern Hemisphere, a below-ground marvel holding up to 14,000 bottles, including wine from 160 South Australian producers. The curated collection spans artisan producers, regional icons, mid-range releases and premium reserves.
General Manager Simon Burgess said the Centre has found its stride over the past quarter century.
“At our inception, we set out to create a home for Australian wine. Now twenty-five years into our journey, we provide a taste of every major region and pour more glasses than anywhere else in the country,” Mr Burgess said.
“Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur, or have never set foot in a cellar door, the Centre welcomes everyone, with no need for expertise, just curiosity. From tastings and tours to immersive events, activations and hospitality, the National Wine Centre is creating new entry points into Australian wine culture that speak to wine enthusiasts, lovers and explorers alike.”
The Botanic Rosé turns ten
Another focal point of the celebrations is the Centre’s own rosé. Produced in partnership with Adelaide University, the Botanic Rosé is the only wine in the Southern Hemisphere made from grapes grown in an urban botanic garden. This October marks its 10th release, offering wine lovers an affordable drop grown right in the heart of Adelaide at the Centre’s on-site vineyard.
The blend features delicate aromas of strawberry, white peach and citrus blossom. The 10th Anniversary edition is crisp and refreshing on the palate, with bright red berry fruit and a clean, dry finish. The wine was crafted and bottled by the team at Adelaide University’s Waite Campus, overseen by Head Winemaker Paul Grbin.
New events for the milestone
The National Wine Centre is uncorking new experiences to mark the occasion, including Twilight Tours, the Centre’s latest after-dark experience, and a pop-up Rosé Bar presented by Jurlique on Friday 16 October.
