Your health system is growing

Whether you need care in a hospital, at an urgent care clinic, or in your own home, the South Australian Government is building a bigger health system – so you can get the care you need, when and where you need it.

With more beds, more healthcare workers, and more care options available across our state, the health
system is growing to meet the needs of all South Australians today and into the future. More beds, more staff, more care More than 600 new hospital beds are being created across South Australia so everyone can get timely care. This includes 130 new mental health beds to support people living with mental illness.

We’re also investing in the people who care for us, with:

  • 640+ more doctors
  • 1,460+ more nurses
  • 380+ more allied health professionals
  • 300+ more paramedics and ambulance officers

Importantly, 360 of these healthcare workers have been placed in regional areas, bringing quality care closer to home for country communities.

Care options

Care closer to home

Not all health care needs to happen in hospital. New services and expanded alternative care options are helping people receive the right care in the right place.

My Home Hospital

If you need hospital-level care, but would prefer to recover in your own space, My Home Hospital may be the right option for you.

  • This service allows eligible patients to receive care at no charge for a broad range of conditions where home-based care is safe and appropriate – like infections needing IV antibiotics or respiratory conditions.
  • It’s ideal for people who want to be surrounded by family, pets, and familiar surroundings while receiving professional, hospital-level support.

Ask your health professional to find out if My Home Hospital could be suitable for you.

SA Health Urgent Care Hubs

Four SA Health Urgent Care Hubs across metropolitan SA help treat patients with acute, non-life-threatening conditions. This referral only service helps patients with timely care for urgent medical needs, avoiding the need to visit an emergency department.

  • By treating people in community settings, we reduce pressure on our busy emergency departments and ensure faster care for those who need it most.

24/7 pharmacies

Getting your medications shouldn’t have to wait. SA Health is supporting four pharmacies to open 24/7 in Norwood, Sailsbury Plain, Clovelly Park and Hallett Cove (opening in August 2025) to provide round-the clock access to essential medicines, health advice and pharmacy services.

  • These pharmacies offer peace of mind for families and individuals, especially after hours, and help reduce visits to emergency departments.

SA Virtual Care Service (SAVCS)

When emergencies happen, every second counts. The SA Virtual Care Service works alongside paramedics, doctors, nurses and community health teams to deliver expert, real-time advice via video link – directly to the bedside or scene.

  • While you won’t access this service directly, it helps frontline teams make quick, informed decisions, ensuring you get the right care – whether it’s at home, in the community, or at hospital.

Free health advice 24/7

With more options than ever before, you might wonder what is best for your situation. healthdirect is available 24 hours a day – a nurse can provide advice and support or connect you to appropriate care. Call 1800 022 222.

The health system is growing – for you.

South Australia is building a bigger health system for everyone. Whether it’s more beds, more staff, or more choice in how and where you can receive care, these investments are designed to support more South Australians – now and into the future.
