Rediscovering the coast aboard Brindabella

More South Australians over 50 are turning away from crowded cruises and rushed itineraries in favour of slower, more meaningful travel – and Brindabella Sailing is answering the call.

Brindabella, an 80-foot maxi yacht with a legendary racing pedigree, is now one of South Australia’s most elegant charter experiences.  You may remember her as the 1997 Sydney to Hobart line honours winner, but today, she sails a gentler course, offering unforgettable experiences along South Australia’s breathtaking coastline.

There’s no need to know port from starboard. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or stepping aboard for the first time, all that’s required is a love of nature, good conversation, and the thrill of doing something a little different.

A man and woman enjoy a sunny day sailing on a boat, with the ocean and clear sky in the background.

At the helm of this unique venture are Brigid and Johnny, two South Australians who returned home in 2021 to bring Brindabella into a new chapter. Leaving behind careers in the creative and corporate worlds, they’ve created a business that celebrates authentic adventure — all with a distinctly local flavour of food, wine, and natural beauty.

Each experience aboard Brindabella is thoughtfully crafted. From sunset sails complete with freshly shucked oysters and grazing platters, to half-day seafood feasts and full-day explorations of hidden coastal coves — no two journeys are the same. You can even take the wheel under Johnny’s expert guidance if you’re curious to try your hand at sailing.

Departing from the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron at Outer Harbor, itineraries stretch from metropolitan Adelaide to Kangaroo Island, the Yorke and Fleurieu Peninsulas, and beyond. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply seeking stillness, there’s a sail to suit.

While Brindabella can accommodate up to 25 guests for day sails, overnight and extended trips are limited to just 10 — ensuring a relaxed, intimate atmosphere. Picture yourself stretched out on deck with a glass of Clare Valley riesling, or sharing stories in the shade with new friends as the coastline drifts by.

It’s not just the scenery that leaves a mark. Many guests say the experience reconnects them — with nature, with others, and with themselves.

It’s the kind of travel that doesn’t just take you somewhere new, but reminds you how good it feels to slow down and simply be.

Brindabella Sailing welcomes guests of all ages, but for many over 50, it’s the perfect mix of comfort, quality, and adventure. No schedules to keep. No crowds to fight. Just sea air, sunshine, and the easy luxury of time well spent.

Whether you’re looking for a new perspective or simply a special way to explore the coast you love, Brindabella offers an unforgettable way to set sail into something truly remarkable.
