The Magic Flute: Where magic, mystery, and wonder await at every turn

Two performers in the State Opera South Australia's The Magic Flute.
This vibrant new production elevates Mozart’s magnificent score to new heights – introducing the rich mythology of Southeast Asia and the buzz of downtown Hong Kong.

Young Tamino embarks on a perilous quest through an enchanted realm where nothing is as it seems. Armed with a magical flute and guided by fast-food delivery guy Papageno, he must navigate a world of wicked queens, mystical trials, and ancient wisdom to rescue his beloved Pamina and discover his true destiny.

A group of people stands on stage with a large screen displaying visuals behind them.

Created by State Opera South Australia in collaboration with Opera Hong Kong and the Beijing Music Festival, this new production had its world premiere in Hong Kong in May 2025. Starring a stellar Australian cast including Nicholas Jones (Tamino), David Greco (Papageno), Teddy Tahu Rhodes (Sarastro), Helena Dix (First Lady) and Jessica Dean (Papagena). US-born Sofia Troncoso shines as Pamina and introducing rising star American soprano Danielle Bavli as the formidable Queen of the Night.

With the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra conducted by State Opera Artistic Director, Dane Lam and the State Opera Chorus.
