Bastille Day returns to Adelaide Central Market

Two people stand in front of a counter, each holding a plate of food, smiling and engaging with each other.
Francophiles, rejoice — Bastille Day is back at the Adelaide Central Market with a spirited celebration of French culture, cuisine and community over two delightful days, Friday 11 and Saturday 12 July.

In honour of la fête nationale (14 July), the Market will be transformed into a vibrant slice of France, complete with live music, roaming performers, family-friendly activities, and of course, indulgent French fare — think terrine, pâté, artisan cheeses, crepes, truffles, and more from beloved local traders.

Event highlights:

  • Live Cooking Demonstrations – Be inspired by the team from Le Cordon Bleu as they create a classic croquembouche, and don’t miss Valerie Henbest from The Smelly Cheese Co. as she reveals the secrets of cooking with French cheese.
  • Champagne Bar – Raise a glass at the French Wine Centre pop-up bar, showcasing a hand-picked selection of French wines by the glass.
  • Roving Entertainment – Rub shoulders with Marie Antoinette and enjoy the lively spectacle of Can Can dancers weaving through the crowd.
  • Specialty Pop-Up Stalls – Discover authentic French crepes by Friwi Crepes at the Producer in Residence and enjoy melted Raclette served by The Smelly Cheese Co.
  • Live Music – Soak up the atmosphere with performances from Mélange à Trois, Adelaide String Duo and Sounds Continental.

Back by popular demand is le tour du Marché — a curated French Market Tour. Guests can expect a glass of French champagne, a taste of the language, and immersive storytelling as they explore the Market’s finest French-inspired stalls. Stops include favourites like The Smelly Cheese Co. and Les Deux Coqs for tastings and tales of la révolution française.

For younger visitors, there’ll be face painting and craft activities from 9.30am to midday on both days, while adults are invited to wind down the festivities with Cheese After Dark – Bastille Day Edition hosted by Valerie Henbest on Saturday evening (bookings essential).

French-born General Manager of the Adelaide Central Market, Fabienne Reilly, describes the event as a joyful expression of the Market’s multicultural heartbeat:

“Our Market is home to some of the finest French-inspired produce in Adelaide — from truffles and terrine to croissants, éclairs and artisan cheese,” Ms Reilly said. “Fête nationale is about more than just food — it’s a chance to come together and celebrate French culture through music, language, and shared experience.”
