Adelaide Fringe Review: RAILED

FIFTY+SA Arts Reviewer, Samantha Foreman, reviews RAILED, a bare chested circus full of heart-stopping displays of skill and brilliance by dashing cowboys, at Adelaide Fringe.

This Western themed acrobatic comedy packs a lot into 55 minutes.

RAILED is a display of strength, agility, and precision timing. Expect circus acts of juggling, Roue Cyr, chair balancing, and knife throwing; and be prepared for the unexpected. A hot tip, this circus is not about a railway journey through the Wild West. Think: Urban Dictionary.

Highlights include an impossible plank, a clever slow motion comedy skit, and incredible chair balancing skills.

The talented performers engage and interact with the audience throughout the show with an unquestionable passion for their craft. It is raunchy, it is funny, it is entertaining, and it pushes the boundaries. It is everything an exceptional Adelaide Fringe show should be!

Head First Acrobats are performing four other shows during Adelaide Fringe season, and whilst RAILED falls into the circus category, it is best to heed the M15+ warnings. Younger audiences will never see unicorns the same again.

A venue observation that I have been deliberating over relates to our seating experience. I attended a mid-week performance, and The Vault had ample seating available for the number of ticket holders. As per most Fringe events, the tickets are not allocated seating but we were assisted by an usher to our seats. The seats were in the very back row, close to an emergency exit. A quick scan around the venue disappointingly showed what appeared to be a similar ageist pattern. The younger audience was given priority seating towards the stage with older patrons seated at the back. I am hopeful that this was a one off, and not based on an assumption that an older audience would not enjoy the show, and potentially decide to exit early.

A must-see show for lovers of acrobatics and ‘finely chiselled bodies’.
