Living, leading and changing: Celebrate International Day of Older Persons

COTA SA is inviting South Australians to celebrate International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) with a free, thought-provoking forum focused on ageing well, purpose, and identity in later life.

Held on Wednesday, 1 October 2025 at the InterContinental Adelaide, the event marks the start of South Australia’s Week of Ageing Well and aims to challenge outdated views on ageing and highlight the value of lived experience at every life stage.

This year’s keynote speaker is Natasha Stott Despoja AO (pictured at top), who made history as the youngest woman elected to Australian Parliament at just 26 and remains the youngest leader of a political party at 32. Now in her 50s, Natasha brings a fresh and personal perspective on ageing in the public eye.

“Natasha brings a unique voice to COTA SA’s ongoing conversation about what it means to age well. Her story speaks directly to the evolving nature of identity, purpose and contribution as we get older, which is at the heart of what this event is all about,” says COTA SA Chief Executive, Miranda Starke.

Natasha will reflect on her own journey—transitioning from public office to private life—sharing experiences from caring for ageing parents, raising young adult children, and redefining herself outside of politics.

The day will be officially opened by The Hon Nat Cook MP, Minister for Seniors and Ageing Well, and includes morning tea, live discussion, and connection with others who are passionate about reshaping what it means to age in Australia.

Why it matters

IDOP, recognised globally since 1990, shines a light on the contributions of older people and challenges ageism and stereotypes that hold us back from living well as we age.

With every year comes experience, knowledge, and an evolving sense of self… No matter how old we are, let’s embrace ageing and support and celebrate each other on this remarkable journey.

As the peak body for older South Australians, COTA SA continues to advocate for positive ageing, inclusion, and purpose beyond 50.
