OzHarvest celebrates the most senior member of their volunteer team

OzHarvest, Australia's leading food rescue organisation, celebrates their most senior member of their volunteer team.

OzHarvest, Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, are celebrating the incredible humans who make up their amazing organisation. One of these incredible humans and the most senior member of their volunteer team is Jim Miles, who just recently turned 97.

Jim is based here in South Australia and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down any time soon. OzHarvest spoke to Jim to find out what keeps him going strong, “I started volunteering on the 5th of October 2017, for almost 6 years now! I heard good food was going to landfill and thought what a waste with people out there who really need it. I love OzHarvest and have met some wonderful people along the way. I hope I can keep it up for some time!”

“I’m lucky to still have a licence at 97, which means I’m still able to drive to all my volunteering jobs!”

OzHarvest says, “Jim is a true inspiration. His passion for helping others and dedication to our cause is a huge reminder that it’s never too late to make a difference – and that perhaps the secret to a long and healthy life is to wear your golden (or yellow!!) heart on your sleeve and to share it with those around you.”

Jim has volunteered with OzHarvest’s Victor Harbor chapter since its beginning. What’s more is, he also volunteers for a number of other programs, including Encounter Industries, the Men’s Shed and Adare Uniting Church. In his younger years, Jim was a farmer on the West Coast of South Australia.

“I was brought up in a family that was very community minded, so I find it natural to want to be a volunteer. I think it is important to do your part, and I enjoy helping people. With OzHarvest, I’m helping with two important things: reducing food waste and getting good food to people that might otherwise go without,” Jim says on the importance of volunteering and helping others.
