Stop and pick the flowers at these SA flower farms

Visitors pick their own flowers among vibrant rows of ranunculus at Charleston Farm in the Adelaide Hills, with rolling green hills stretching into the background
South Australia's flower farms are opening their gates to visitors across the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and the Clare Valley, offering pick your own sessions, floral workshops, and sunflower festivals worth planning your season around.

There’s something pretty special about cutting your own blooms straight from the field, choosing exactly what speaks to you, bundling them up with muddy hands, and driving home with a backseat full of colour. South Australia has become a destination for exactly this kind of unhurried pleasure, with a handful of flower farms now opening their gates to visitors across the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and beyond. Here’s where to go.

Hahndorf Flower Farm

Paechtown, Adelaide Hills

One of the Adelaide Hills’ most-loved agritourism destinations, Hahndorf Flower Farm sits on a working property in Paechtown, just minutes from Hahndorf. The Pick Your Own experience runs for 90 minutes and lets visitors wander the flower fields and choose their own seasonal blooms: think ranunculus, dahlias, and whatever the season has on offer. For those who want more of a creative challenge, the Floral Design Workshop is a two-hour hands-on session guided by the farm’s florist, covering sustainable arrangements without floral foam. A self-guided tour option is available for those who’d rather stroll at their own pace, with QR codes along the trail revealing the farm’s history and seasonal stories. Open Wednesday to Sunday, bookings required.

Little Lyndoch Flower Farm

Lyndoch, Barossa Valley

A boutique cut flower farm and floral design studio set in the Barossa Valley, Little Lyndoch is built around creativity, connection and a genuine love of growing. For those wanting more than a single afternoon in the flowers, the annual Bloom Retreat, a three-day immersive experience for florists, flower farmers and creatives, is the farm’s centrepiece offering, covering everything from floral design and flower farming to business strategy and social media. It’s a serious investment for those looking to turn a passion into something more. The farm also grows premium cut flowers, breeds its own dahlia seedlings, and sells tubers and corms seasonally for home growers.

Three visitors gather among colourful ranunculus blooms at Charleston Farm in the Adelaide Hills, each holding freshly picked bouquets in the warm afternoon light

Charleston Farm

Charleston, Adelaide Hills

Part working farm, part event space, Charleston Farm has built a devoted following for good reason. Pick Your Own sessions run through spring to autumn, available on select dates in morning or evening timeslots (the best times to cut flowers, as any grower will tell you). Beyond the standard picking sessions, Charleston Farm also runs Snip + Sip evenings (flowers and bubbles, a combination that needs no further explanation), Paint + Pick collaborations, and private hire for groups wanting the flower patch to themselves. Dates are released with limited notice to ensure the flowers are at peak abundance, so following the farm on social media or joining the mailing list is the best way to stay across availability.

Bookings required: check website for pricing and dates.

Shimmering Pines Farm

Tarlee, Clare Valley

About 90 minutes north of Adelaide at the gateway to the Clare Valley, Shimmering Pines is best known for its annual Sunflower Festival, a short, spectacular window each December when the three-acre sunflower field turns the property gold. Pick Your Own sessions run from spring through autumn across a range of seasonal blooms, with tickets released close to the date via their newsletter (always worth subscribing, they go quickly). The farm also runs popular Pizza & Pick evenings, combining flower picking with wood-fired pizza from Frankie & Son’s. Private group sessions are available for a minimum of ten people, a very good reason to round up some friends.

The farm reopens in spring, so check the website for session dates and availability.

Good to know: All four farms operate seasonally and book out quickly. Sign up to their newsletters and follow on Instagram to be first to know when sessions open. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat, and allow at least half a day because you’ll want to stay longer than you planned.
