Murray River Trails offers an array of activities that cater to all preferences. From leisurely walking tours that showcase picturesque landscapes to exhilarating wildlife safaris, there’s something for everyone. Glide along the tranquil waters on a kayak or unwind on a riverboat, allowing the serene beauty of the surroundings to captivate your senses.
The visionary behind Murray River Trails is Tony Sharley, who saw an opportunity to diversify the Riverland economy during the Millennium Drought in 2010. Having travelled to river regions worldwide, Tony found that the Murray River in the outback of South Australia surpassed all other river experiences. He wanted to share this magical destination with others, fostering understanding and advocacy for the river.
The concept of a guided multi-day walk along the river with a houseboat for accommodation became a reality in 2016. Each day, as the small group embarks on their walk, their houseboat accommodation moves to the next destination. This unique approach allows guests to carry a light pack and return to the same room each day.
Murray River Trails prides itself on showcasing the authenticity of the Riverland. Passionate local guides provide insightful commentary, and guests indulge in delectable three-course meals paired with award-winning local wines. The menu, crafted by renowned chef Andrew Fielke, highlights regional delights such as Murray cod and yabbies.
To watch the sun rise over the vast forested floodplains, being interrupted by emus or an echidna or a goanna, walking through a pink carpet of pigface, dipping feet in the cool river after a day walking, seeing a squadron of pelicans feeding or whistling kites roosting on their nest platforms, witnessing the coloured reflections of sunset or sunrise… There is magic everywhere and our guides help our guests discover it.Tony Sharley, Owner, Murray River Trails
Recognised as the first multi-day walk on a major river in Australia, Murray River Walk swiftly joined the esteemed Great Walks of Australia collective. Their distinctive approach sets them apart – instead of cruising on the river, guests walk along its banks, creating a truly magical experience.
To ensure a harmonious blend of adventure and relaxation for guests of all ages and fitness levels, Murray River Walk is rated as an easy walk. The pace is leisurely, covering approximately 10-14 kilometers per day over three days. The route traverses diverse landscapes, showcasing creeks, billabongs, woodlands, forests, cliffs, and the rim of the valley. The comfortable houseboat offers a serene retreat, complemented by a hot spa on the top deck and exquisite three-course meals each night. For those with limited mobility, the option to remain on the boat and enjoy a scenic cruise is available.
