Social Photos: BRIGHT Walk Launch

The BRIGHT Walk Launch was held at SAHMRI last Thursday, June 1st. Attendees heard from Professor Maria Makrides, Andrew Shoubridge and one of Australia’s best-known culinary icons, Maggie Beer.

At the BRIGHT Walk Launch last week attendees were addressed by Professor Maria Makrides, who is renowned as SA Scientist of the Year. She elaborated on her research regarding the influence of nutrition on expectant mothers, the impact on breast milk for infants, and the ongoing efforts to comprehend the high prevalence of allergies among children, such as those related to peanuts.

Andrew Shoubridge, whose research has received significant funding from the previous year’s walk, disclosed the motivation behind his study on the connection between the gut microbiome and the brain. This research has the potential to play a crucial role in preventing the onset of dementia.

They were also joined by Maggie Beer, a well-known culinary icon in Australia. Maggie explained the profound impact that our food choices can have on brain health and overall well-being, particularly in old age. A thoughtfully crafted menu was provided to enhance the attendees’ health, guided by Maggie’s innate understanding of the positive effects of good food on emotional well-being.

Prospective participants were encouraged to prepare themselves for SAHMRI’s BRIGHT Walk 2023, which aims to bring together thousands of South Australians in support of research for curing diseases and saving lives. This extraordinary illuminated event will take place on a single night, challenging participants to walk 15km during the winter darkness.

Collectively, the BRIGHT Walk endeavors to demonstrate to families facing life-threatening conditions that even during their most challenging moments, they are not alone. The ultimate goal is to raise $1 million as tangible proof of this solidarity.
