Here is a genuinely rare opportunity: the chance to play cricket on the Adelaide Oval turf, compete alongside South Australian cricket legends, and raise funds for two causes that touch nearly every family in the state.
The inaugural Biggest Backyard Cricket Bash will take place on Sunday 11 October 2026, presented by Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation and Cancer Council SA, with support from the South Australian Cricket Association.
Limited to just ten teams, the event combines the nostalgic spirit of backyard cricket with a day of competition on one of the world’s most celebrated sporting grounds. Teams will play a fast-paced T10 tournament across multiple pitches throughout the day, with the top team from each pool earning a place in the grand final on the iconic centre wicket.
The grand final teams will be joined by South Australian cricket legends for what promises to be an unforgettable finale.
What you need to know

- Team entry: $10,000 per team (all proceeds shared between the two charities)
- Team size: Register 10 players, with eight on the field at any one time
- Format: T10 tournament, two pools of five teams, round-robin matches leading to a grand final
- Hospitality: Gourmet BBQ lunch provided by Adelaide Oval, refreshments throughout the day
Expressions of interest are already strong, and with only ten positions available, organisers are encouraging teams to register early.
Supporting research that matters
All funds raised will be shared between Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation and Cancer Council SA, supporting life-changing research in both fields.
John Mannion, CEO of Breakthrough, said the event reflects the power of community in driving better outcomes for mental health.

Every breakthrough begins with research, and events like this help fund the discoveries that can improve treatment, provide hope, and ultimately save lives.”
Kerry Rowlands, Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Council SA, said the event offers a meaningful way for people to support cancer research while enjoying a unique experience.
“Most South Australians have, in some way, been touched by cancer. Every team that takes part will be helping to fund vital research and support services that make a real difference to people affected by cancer.”
Who can enter
The event is open to workplace teams, groups of friends, sporting clubs and community groups. Whether your cricket skills peaked in the backyard or you still turn out on weekends, this is about coming together behind causes that matter.
The first team will be announced at the SACA Mid-Winter Ball fundraising auction on 22 July, marking the formal launch of the event.
Organisers hope the Biggest Backyard Cricket Bash will become an annual fixture on the South Australian fundraising calendar.
