New Shanghai, the family-owned Australian brand known for its handcrafted Shanghainese dumplings and Art Deco-inspired dining rooms, opens at Burnside Village on Saturday 19 September.
The restaurant brings a style of dining that has earned a loyal following across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: live dumpling theatre where trained chefs fold each bun by hand, interiors modelled on the glamour of 1930s Shanghai, and a menu built around traditional recipes passed down through generations.

Franchise partner and Adelaide restaurateur David Wang says the eastern suburbs location felt right from the start. “This is a part of the city that appreciates great food and great design, and we have created somewhere people can drop in for dumplings with the family, settle in for a long lunch, or come just for a gin at The Bund,” he says.
What to expect
The 304-seat venue draws on the Art Deco heritage of Shanghai’s historic Bund waterfront: a bold red and green palette, brass and gold detailing, and the city skyline traced in tile and light throughout the room.
The space includes a main dining room, an outdoor terrace seating around 74, three private dining rooms styled on a traditional Shanghai apothecary, and a fully glazed dumpling theatre where guests can watch chefs at work.

The Bund, the venue’s dedicated gin bar named after Shanghai’s famous waterfront, serves signature gin cocktails, a curated gin and tonic selection, and a South Australian-first wine list. It has its own identity and will host after-work drinks, happy hour and events.
The menu
Expect New Shanghai’s signature dishes: xiao long bao, prawn dumplings with peanut sauce, pan-fried pork buns and Shanghai-style braised pork belly. The broader menu covers handmade dumplings, dim sum, kung pao chicken, stir-fried noodles and classic Chinese stir-fries, alongside claypot dishes and fresh live seafood.
Shanghai yum cha runs on weekends, and a deli counter sells handcrafted dumplings, festive pastries and ready-to-eat dishes to take home.

Burnside Village Centre General Manager Jodie Kannane says the restaurant adds something distinctive to the precinct. “With chefs hand-folding dumplings before your eyes, immersive 1930s Shanghai-inspired interiors and a menu designed for sharing, it is set to become a must-visit destination for food lovers.”
New Shanghai has been serving Shanghai-style Chinese cuisine for more than three decades, with company and franchise-partner restaurants across Australia and a growing presence in the Middle East.
